The First round of the NFL Draft is all wrapped up and... I don't know how to feel. I don't really feel like anyone "won" the first round, and I think there was several head scratching moments throughout the event Thursday Night. I figured I would rank all the picks from worst pick, to best pick. Now obviously, it goes without saying, that not every pick was bad, and almost all of these guys are obviously 1st round talents for a reason, and can and will very easily make me look dumb. These are first impressions after the 1st night, before day 2.
32.
PICK 8
FALCONS SELECT
MICHAEL PENIX JR
I really want to know why. You hold a top 10 overall pick in the NFL Draft. You are the favorites to win the NFC South, you just paid a QB 9 figures, and have a solid offense, but could use some star power on defense. Why, in any scenario, are multiple adults signing off on this draft pick to happen. This literally could've been ANY defensive player, and it would've been a better pick than this one. Another thing, Penix Jr is 24 years old. There's nothing wrong with that, but that just means he is ready to play now. If your plan is to not play him for another 4 years, then WHY would you spend a top 10 pick on a back-up QB?!?! Even if you have your heart set on QB, which they shouldn't, why not go with the 21 year old QB?! I am so lost on so many levels with this pick. I don't see a single scenario where the Falcons don't look back and not regret this massively.
31.
PICK 31
NINERS SELECT
RICKY PEARSALL
I realistically personally don't hate this one as much as I should, but being real for a moment, this is not a good look. Drafting a WR almost certainly means that Deebo or Aiyuk are on their way out, and they decide to replace them with... Ricky Pearsall. This one doesn't sting because they got the position wrong, they got it right, but the guys that were still on the board is going to be nightmare fuel for San Francisco.
30.
PICK 25
PACKERS SELECT
JORDAN MORGAN
Did the Packers draft a tackle? Yes. Can he play right away? Yes. Then why is this one ranked so low? Value. Morgan is a second round tackle. Yes, tackles were flying off the board in the first round, but there were still lineman on the board that made more sense. Barton, Powers-Johnson, and Guyton were all available still at that moment in time. I think he could be okay, but there is a lot of dudes available here, especially a lot of corners.
29.
PICK 15
COLTS SELECT
LAIATU LATU
Latu was the first defensive player off the board at 15, just like everyone had predicted. What hurts the most about this pick is, they had a choice out of every defensive player, in a historically good corner class, and didn't cash in. Arnold was right there. Instead they went a little risky with Latu. Latu will put up numbers, but as an edge rusher, he is likely EDGE3 in the class. A bit of a head-scratcher.
28.
PICK 7
TITANS SELECT
J.C. LATHAM
Now we work into the picks that will get the job done in the NFL, but there was one big thing wrong, such as a reach for the value, or didn't adress a need. The Titans adressed a need, but probably had better tackle options on the table, and also had Odunze on the table as well. This was a position where I think the Titans could've moved back for a team wanting a QB or Odunze and gotten a King's ransom, PLUS a tackle. The Chargers going Alt at 5 makes them sticking here look worse.
27.
PICK 32
PANTHERS SELECT
XAVIER LEGETTE
Look, in the draft, if you love a player, then you draft them. It was clear the Panthers really liked Legette from the get-go, and they moved up 1 spot to secure him in the first round. I personally respect that, I think the upside of Legette is of AJ Brown and Metcalf, which would be a HUGE help to Young. However... AD Mitchell, Keon Coleman, and Ladd McConkey were all available, and they didn't have to move up for him. I get the pick, I do, it's just a little silly.
26.
PICK 5
CHARGERS SELECT
JOE ALT
Now this is bold of me, because I firmly believe the Chargers had to have had trade offers for the number 5 pick, and they were probably solid. If they didn't have a single good offer, then I would move this pick WAY up my ranking. However, I kind of gotta go with my gut and say that there will be Joe Alt's in the future, I don't know if they are going to see a prospect like Nabers for awhile. That's where I think they messed up, the not trading back is the cherry on top for why they are at 26. Alt wil be a very good tackle in the league, I just feel like going Nabers was the better play, this team really lacks WR talent across the board, and there are no true no 1. guys left in the class, except Keon Coleman. If the Chargers select Coleman in the 2nd round, I will fullt excuse this pick.
25.
PICK 21
DOLPHINS SELECT
CHOP ROBINSON
I think this pick is just kind of meh. I do really like Chop as a prospect, but he is pretty raw and will need some development. I felt like it was a need being met, which is good, but at the same time there were some good interior line-men on the board available, and even Worthy if they wanted to go that route. I don't hate it, nor think it is a really bad pick, it is just VERY risky.
24.
PICK 11
JETS SELECT
OLU FASHANU
We are officially in the tier of picks that I don't really have a strong opinion one way or another one, that are just "alright" first round picks. I look at this draft pick as a very future planning pick for the Jets, which is interesting, given their track record of wanting to win now. This pick doesn't really help them win now, as it's not a need this season, but Fashanu can be a franchise tackle. I think everyone was expecting it to be a WR to help them win now, or I think Bowers probably should have been the pick here, but I honestly can't say I hate it at all personally, just from an objective standpoint, it doesn't help them win games this year, barring injury to either starting tackle, but it plans for the future.
23.
PICK 12
BRONCOS SELECT
BO NIX
Once again, don't love it, don't hate it. I don't see the hate this pick is getting though, as all the QB's were off the board, and their rival was one pick behind them, also needing a QB, it makes sense for them to cash in at 12. They could've tried to get cute and moved back in the first round, and maybe Nix would have been taken. Nix fits that system in Denver, and while I believe they still have a long ways to go, it's a pretty decent start.
22.
PICK 28
CHIEFS SELECT
XAVIER WORTHY
This is the type of pick I was expecting from Kansas City before thursday night, and I mocked Worthy to the Chiefs a couple of times as well. However, the context is important. They moved up 4 spots to get him, 4 spots that I don't think were entirely interested in the speedster. Also, In terms of all around WR talent, he was likely not the best available. Mitchell, McConkey, and Coleman were all available at that pick. Will he have a good career in Kansas City and will he be successful? Yes, absolutely, but let's not excuse some of the question marks around this pick just because "it's the Chiefs", it is completely fair to think this is just an okay pick.
21.
PICK 30
RAVENS SELECT
NATE WIGGINS
I would like to give context, that every pick from here on out I would give some sort of A grade to the pick. Wiggins fell all the way to 30 for the Ravens to scoop up, which is immense value for maybe the most experienced corner in the class. Wiggins will go to Baltimore and have a great career. So why is it at 21? I just feel that this pick could have maybe been WR, or DeJean. In retrospect, it looks like a fine pick, and I still give it an A, I just like 20 picks from this draft more.
20.
PICK 27
CARDINALS SELECT
DARIUS ROBINSON
Personally, Robinson is one of my favorite players in the whole class, so I desperately want to put this higher, however, I think it is fair to say that there could have been better talent on the board available. The Cardinals need as many blue chip players on their team, and I think DeJean, Newton, and McKinstry all have that upside for them. In defense of the pick, Robinson has a VERY high floor as an edge rusher. He is going to make a comfortable living being one of the best run defenders in the NFL, so I have to put him in this mid-range.
19.
PICK 13
RAIDERS SELECT
BROCK BOWERS
I really shouldn't like this pick, but I do. Can you really blame a team for getting a blue chip prospect, even if it isn't a position of need? I don't think so. Yes, they could have addressed corner with this pick, but it is a deep corner class, and there won't be a Brock Bowers prospect for many years. They can still run 2 TE sets with him and Meyer. I personally love it, but I understand if people aren't high on it. A comparison I thought of was if say, Malik Nabers or Marvin Harrison fell to the Rams. Do the Rams need WR? No, but if Marvin Harrison Jr is there, it is kind of a disservice to not select him.
18.
PICK 16
SEAHAWKS SELECT
BYRON MURPHY II
This is just such a solid pick. There's nothing about it that screams like perfect fit, or huge position of need, by Murphy is such a good player. Getting him at 16 is great value. Not much else to say, they could've gone with one of the edge rushers, but I think it is completely fair to have a higher grade on Murphy than the edge rushers.
17.
PICK 2
COMMANDERS SELECT
JAYDEN DANIELS
Now, I do like Jayden Daniels, and keep in mind, these are A graded picks. I just personally feel that Maye could've been a better pick, but I will admit they were close. I hope it turns out well for both parties.
16.
PICK 20
STEELERS SELECT
TROY FAUTANU
I really like this pick. Fautanu was one of my favorite offensive line players in the draft. For the Steelers to get a good tackle at 20 after the absolute run on them early in the round, is nothing short of good paitence. Sure, they could've gotten Arnold here, but I don't see how they really regret this pick here.
15.
PICK 23
JAGUARS SELECT
BRIAN THOMAS JR
I think what makes this such a great pick is they somehow moved back in the draft and STILL got an elite WR. Thomas Jr I think will be their WR1 by the end of the season next season, that's how good he is. I don't know why no one was wanting to move up for him, but the Jags moving back and still getting him is just insane to me. Sure they needed corner, but they also needed WR, and Thomas Jr is really, really good value at 23.
14.
PICK 22
EAGLES SELECT
QUINYON MITCHELL
This pick is good. Not shocked Mitchell fell, as I had a feeling he might, but the Eagles had their pick of any corner in the class, and Mitchell is maybe one of the more riskier ones. I felt like Wiggins was a perfect fit, and Arnold was also very safe, but Mitchell is still a really good player, and can't fault them for getting a great talent at a position they need.
13.
PICK 10
VIKINGS SELECT
J.J. MCCARTHY
Well, most people assumed the Vikings would have to move up in the draft, all the way before pick 6 to maybe land McCarthy. I think they are pleased they were able to get him at 10, so they didn't have to sell the farm to get him. That's what I like the most here, they didn't give up much, and it's a perfect landing spot for him as well.
12.
PICK 26
BUCS SELECT
GRAHAM BARTON
I can't lie, they got a little lucky. The Cowboys moving down the board with him available was the best thing that could have happened for the bucs, as they likely would've taken him. I thought they would likely be screwed by all the offensive linemen being taken in the first round, that there would be no way Barton or Powers-Johnson lands to them, but Barton did. Gotta give props for getting the perfect fit at the top need.
11.
PICK 29
COWBOYS SELECT
TYLER GUYTON
Cowboys haters won't like this one. This was very smart of the Cowboys to navigate the board like this, and address a pressing need. Getting a top 75 pick, and your guy, is what the draft is all about in my opinion. That's such good value for them, as they are going to be able to fill their other needs while still getting a very good pick in the first round.
10.
PICK 18
BENGALS SELECT
AMARIUS MIMS
Bengals are making it clear that they are going to protect Joe Burrow this season, and I love that. I love that because if Burrow has more time to throw, more time for Chase to get open, more points being scored. This pick wasn't anything fancy, but it is an extremely effective pick in maintaining their Super Bowl window.
9.
PICK 6
GIANTS SELECT
MALIK NABERS
We are working into our A+ picks of the first round, and the Giants fans may take a sigh of relief. There was some chatter about the Giants going QB, so I thought that this pick may be McCarthy. I'm happy it's not because the Giants have one of the worst weapons situation in the league, so adding a Uber-talented player like Nabers only makes sense.
8.
PICK 9
BEARS SELECT
ROME ODUNZE
I mean, the Bears MIGHT be a disgusting offense to watch. The weaponry this team has, is insane. Odunze would be a WR1 on so many teams, yet he is likely going to be a WR3 for Caleb Williams. That is utterly insane. The Bears landing him amid teams like the Jets who were wanting WR, is also really good value.
7.
PICK 14
SAINTS SELECT
ROME ODUNZE
This pick isn't anything crazy, but it is great value, a team need, and maybe the 2nd best tackle in the class. They needed tackle bad, and they got a stellar one that probably shouldn't have been there. Really good for the Saints who are normally unpredictable in the 1st round.
6.
PICK 3
PATRIOTS SELECT
DRAKE MAYE
This may feel boring to have at 6, but it's the right pick, and a potential franchise altering pick, so I don't know how I could put this pick any lower. Maye has a very high ceiling in the league.
5.
PICK 4
CARDINALS SELECT
MARVIN HARRISON JR
Once again, may be boring to have this high, but what else am I to do? Props to them for sticking and picking one of the best WR prospects we've ever seen.
4.
PICK 1
BEARS SELECT
CALEB WILLIAMS
Some might say it's not an amazing pick in terms of it being one of the best in the first, but you have to keep in mind that they made the trade with the Panthers to acquire this pick. Williams is going to be great for the Bears.
3.
PICK 17
VIKINGS SELECT
DALLAS TURNER
Gettint what should be a top 10 pick at 17?! Are you kidding me Minnesota?! That is a stellar first round by the Vikings to make these trades to get their guys. They legitimately have a chance to do what the Texans did last season, as McCarthy will likely put up nice numbers, and Turner will as well. I LOVE this for the Vikings, props to them for getting him well past when he should have gone.
2.
PICK 19
RAMS SELECT
JARED VERSE
If you were wondering if the Rams still remember how to draft in the first round, oh they do, they definitely do. Getting Verse at 19 is incredible value, at an immense position of need. Throwing him with the other young dogs they have on the defensive line? That is an incredible job by the Rams to not let the young stud continue to fall.
1.
PICK 24
LIONS SELECT
TERRION ARNOLD
However, in their hometown of Detroit, the Lions won the first round, and VERY easily I might add. This was far and away the best pick of the 1st round, and quite frankly, there shouldn't even be an explanation why. He is a top 10 player in the class, for some reason falling to 24, the Lions desperately needed corner, and to move up and grab him? That is pure art by the Detriot Lions.
